The bacteriostatic top fabric is fire resistant, fluidproof, tear resistant, cleanable, and replaceable. The pleated design allows full integration with the mattress’s Geo-Matt style shear-relieving surface while minimizing hammocking.

Foam Topper

The patented Geo-Matt® style foam topper is a high density, medical grade foam. The unique geometric design consists of over 800 individual cells, each of which acts individually to redistribute pressure, to reduce heat and moisture buildup on the skin, and to reduce shear to underlying tissues. This foam topper is 2" in height and includes the unique Heel Slope™ feature, designed to further reduce pressure for the sensitive heel area.

Safety Edge Bolsters

Unique raised perimeter Wings® design combines with the patented Safety Edge™ bolster system to encourage the patient toward the mattress and away from entrapment or falls. Lowered, padded opening makes transfers easier and safer for user and caregiver. The Safety Edge consists of a firm 2-part foam bolster whose inner edge contours under pressure to direct the patient towards the center of the mattress.

Air Cylinders

The inflation system consists of four urethane air cylinders that run head to foot underneath the body and the foam topper. These cylinders perform the Lateral Rotation Therapy. Inflation/deflation cycles are set but the hand-held control pendant.

Micro-Processor Motion Systems

Uniquely built into the side of the mattress, the micro-processor controls air pressures within the air cylinders, and is programmed by the hand-held pendant.

Lateral Rotation Air Therapy

The PressureGuard Turn Select provides easily customizable lateral rotation 24 hours a day. By slowly, gently and quietly repositioning the user, the Turn Select facilitates treatment of pressure ulcers while helping to offset the hazards of immobility.

Hand-held pendant control allows convenient programming of the system`s four operating modes. Caregivers can select a standard turning program, or create a pattern fully customized to the patient's condition.

Select Roll Angles of 5, 15, or up to 30 degrees.

Select Roll Patterns in any combination of left, center and right.

Select Dwell Times of 1, 15, 30, 60 or 120 minutes in any position or angle.

Microprocessor controlled motion system is integrated directly into mattress, leaving no bulky pump or external air lines to contend with. Just hour after hour of whisper-quiet, trouble free operation. Even during power loss, the system maintains proper inflation and support until power is restored and rotation can be resumed.

The Science Behind the Geo-Matt Design

This patented support surface design was developed by Span-America in the late 1980’s in conjunction with Dr. Thomas Krouskop of the Baylor School of Medicine. Computer-guided equipment is used to cut foam into a geometric pattern of supportive cubes that are undercut with an open channel.

Unlike flat or convoluted ("eggcrate") foam, these individual cubes allow the surface to conform to the body and accommodate bony prominences, redistributing pressure across the support surface. This minimizes the pulling of the skin and tissue over bony prominences, thereby offsetting the harmful effects of shearing forces.

The “Ring of Air” helps to disperse heat and moisture away from the body and out into the atmosphere. The channel also assists in pressure management by providing, in effect, a layer of air between two layers of foam to enhance conformance of the foam to the body.

Does it work? In a two-year independent study*, 83 patients at risk for, or with, pressure ulcers were randomized to either the Geo-Matt or an air-suspension bed. Results: an analysis of covariance revealed no statistically significant difference in the prevention or healing of any stage pressure ulcer with respect to type of support surface used.

Based on its clinical efficacy as an overlay surface, Span-America has incorporated the design into the surface of the majority of its mattress, seat cushion, and patient positioning products.

The Science Behind the Heel Slope for heel protection

Heels are the second most common site for pressure ulcers, second only to the sacrum. By virtue of its thinly padded surface, relatively poor blood supply, and difficult anatomical design for offloading, the heel is especially vulnerable to tissue damage. Heel ulcers are also difficult to

heal, due to these same reasons.

In order to help to reduce the incidence of heel breakdown, all Geo-Mattress and PressureGuard products are designed with a Heel Slope. The foot end of the mattress slopes down to increase load on the calves and to decrease load on the heels. On average, heel pressures are reduced by about 27% with this design compared to flat designs.

A flat surface does not conform to the shape of the lower leg, especially behind the Achilles tendon.

Result: The heel must bear excess load, and skin will break down more easily.

The Heel Slope slightly lowers the heel, allowing hte mattress to fill in the space behind the Achilles tendon.

Result: Pressure is distributed over the entire lower leg, reducing pressure on the heel.

Science Behind Safety Edge

The PressureGuard Safety Edge helps to prevent falls and bed rail entrapment.

The Safety Edge is a two-part bolster system surrounding the air tubes on all PressureGuard products. When the user rolls toward or sits on the edge of the mattress, the inner of the two parts bends in toward the center o fthe mattress, while the outer part resists compression.

Standard, fully air-filled mattresses collapse as the patient rolls toward the edge, directing the patient into the siderails or onto the floor.
