Geo-Matt®
GeoMatt cut foam top
The patented Geo-Matt® style foam topper is a high density, medical
grade foam. The unique geometric design consists of over 800
individual cells, each of which acts individually to redistribute
pressure, to reduce heat and moisture buildup on the skin, and to
reduce shear to underlying tissues. This foam overlay is 3.5” in
height.
Upper head section and lower foot section
Cells are smaller at the head and foot section to disperse pressure
over these sensitive areas.
Body section
Cells are larger to provide pressure dispersion over the torso.

The patented Ring-of-Air performs several functions. It allows each
cell to act individually to conform to the body. It assists in
removing heat and moisture from the body by channeling heat and
vapor away. And it reduces shearing by allowing the individual
cells to move independently, reducing pull on the skin.

The bacteriostatic top fabric is fire resistant, fluidproof, tear
resistant, cleanable, and replaceable. The pleated design allows
full integration with the mattress’s Geo-Matt style shear-relieving
surface while minimizing hammocking.

treatment of pressure ulcers.
The top surface is cut using our patented Geo-Matt design, which creates
more than 800 individually responsive foam cells that are anatomically
sized to the area of the body they carry. This zoned design delivers the
ideal support characteristics needed at the head, torso, and lower
extremities. By independently absorbing pressure points, the cells allow
the Geo-Matt to customize its support to the body's natural curvature
while minimizing the effects of pressure and shearing. In addition,
Geo-Matt's exclusive "Ring-of-Air® " feature helps to ventilate the
surface, channeling heat away from the patient to minimize perspiration
build-up.

The Science Behind the Geo-Matt Design
The
tunnel of air at the base of each cube of foam in the Geo-Matt cut.
The tunnel, or ring, helps to transport heat and moisture away from
the body, and assists in the conformance of the foam to the body for
pressure dispersion. In effect, the Ring-of-Air in the foam creates
a foam/air /foam layered product.
 This patented
support surface design was developed by Span-America in
the late 1980’s in conjunction with Dr. Thomas Krouskop
of the Baylor School of Medicine. Computer-guided
equipment is used to cut foam into a geometric pattern
of supportive cubes that are undercut with an open
channel.
Unlike flat or convoluted ("eggcrate") foam, these
individual cubes allow the surface to conform to the
body and accommodate bony prominences,
redistributing pressure
across the support surface. This minimizes the pulling
of the skin and tissue over bony prominences, thereby
offsetting the harmful effects of shearing
forces.
The “Ring of Air” helps to disperse heat
and moisture away from the body and out
into the atmosphere. The channel also assists in
pressure management by providing, in effect, a layer
of air between two layers of foam to enhance
conformance of the foam to the body.
Does it work? In a two-year independent
study*, 83 patients at risk for, or with, pressure
ulcers were randomized to either the Geo-Matt or an
air-suspension bed. Results: an analysis of
covariance revealed no statistically significant
difference in the prevention or healing of any
stage pressure ulcer with respect to type of support
surface used.
Based on its clinical efficacy as an overlay
surface, Span-America has incorporated the
design into the surface of the majority of its
mattress, seat cushion, and patient positioning
products.
